He managed to use a hidden feature that existed in the Playstation 3 that allowed him to experiment with lots of highly advanced stuff in MGS4.
If you remember the PS3 Technology showcase of Toy Ducks in a bathtub.
This was how MGS4 was able to provide insane graphical scenes while still having a stable performance.
